On June 3rd, a very small but very special group of young learners celebrated the end of the Spring Semester at Playgarden Prep. For many schools and early childhood education centers, a graduation ceremony is a familiar tradition. For us, it marked something even more meaningful: the first major milestone for Playgarden Prep’s Upper West Side location!
When we opened our doors at 601 Amsterdam Avenue in January 2026, we arrived with more than fifteen years of experience serving New York City families. Even so, opening in a new neighborhood is always an act of listening, learning, and building trust. Our goal was not simply to bring Playgarden to the Upper West Side, but to become part of the fabric of a community that cares deeply about children and their growth.
The space itself reflects that vision. Flooded with natural light and designed with young learners in mind, the school combines signature Playgarden elements — a spacious movement floor, thoughtfully curated Montessori materials, inviting classroom spaces, and our iconic rainbow — with features that make this location uniquely its own. Over the past six months, those rooms have transformed from a beautifully renovated space into something much more important: a place filled with laughter, curiosity, friendships, and learning.
What has stood out most during our first semester has been the warmth of the Upper West Side community. We have met families who are deeply invested in their children’s development and early childhood education, eager to build connections, and excited to engage in the life of the neighborhood. From Baby Music classes and enrichment programs to drop-off experiences and after-school learning pods, we have had the privilege of supporting children at many different stages of their early learning journeys.
This range of experiences reflects what we call the Playgarden Pathway: a continuum of programs designed to meet children where they are developmentally and grow alongside them. Whether a family is seeking a gentle first introduction to a learning environment, or a more structured school experience, our goal is to provide meaningful opportunities for children and their families to learn, explore, and thrive together.
The children who graduated from our Preschool Readiness class embodied that mission beautifully! Since January, they have practiced separations and transitions, built confidence in classroom routines, developed relationships with teachers and peers, and stretched themselves through countless early childhood education learning experiences. Their accomplishments may seem small to adults, but in early childhood education, these moments represent tremendous growth.
As we celebrated their achievements, we were also celebrating the growth of our newest school community. Many of these children will return in September as members of our very first Upper West Side Preschool class, and we are honored to continue their learning journeys.
Our first semester of early childhood education on the Upper West Side has been one of gratitude, discovery, and excitement. We are proud of what has been built in just six short months, and even more excited for what lies ahead. Thank you to the families who have welcomed us into this neighborhood. We cannot wait to continue growing together!
